New Year's Day
New
Year’s Day, first day of the year, January 1 in the Gregorian calendar.
In the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century) most European countries
observed New Year's Day on March 25. With the Gregorian calendar's
introduction in 1582, Roman Catholic countries began to celebrate New Year's
Day on January 1. In modern times, New Year's Day is an occasion for
celebration and the making of personal resolutions.
Mostly people wish each other a
Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a season's greetings altogether.
